Dr. Temple Grandin event raises funds for the National Farm Animal Care Council
(Ottawa) 05 June 2012 – National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) representatives were on hand to receive a generous donation last week at a Dr. Temple Grandin speaking engagement in Brandon, Manitoba. The event was organized as a fundraiser for NFACC by HyLife Ltd., Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives; Manitoba Beef Producers, Manitoba Pork Council, Maple Leaf Consumer Foods, Quintaine Livestock and Steve’s Livestock Transport. Donations for NFACC were collected in lieu of admission.
Over 700 people filled the room to hear Dr. Grandin, one of the most celebrated and effective animal welfare advocates in the world. Her presentation supported a positive conversation about the importance of farm animal welfare for those involved in animal agriculture. Dr. Grandin is an accomplished author of many scientific articles and books, was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2010 and has had her life story told in an award-winning HBO movie entitled, “Temple Grandin.”
“NFACC represents a collaborative and responsible approach to animal care. Similarly, this event is the culmination of livestock agriculture, business, and government working together to bring Dr. Temple Grandin to speak to stakeholders on why animal welfare is the right thing to do”, said Quintin Pearce of Quintaine Livestock. “NFACC is a fitting choice for the donations collected through this event.”
Organizing groups covered all costs for participants to hear Dr. Grandin. In addition to the $1,600 collected at the door, Manitoba Pork Council generously donated $5,000.
Edouard Asnong, NFACC’s Chair attended the event and expressed gratitude to the organizers and attendees for the generous donation. He noted that, “Practical solutions that address farm animal welfare concerns require a commitment from all of us to work together for progress and success. An event such as this illustrates that commitment to responsible animal care by both the organizers and participants.” Mr. Asnong advised that donations from the event would be used to further build NFACC’s collaborative efforts in advancing animal care and welfare.
NFACC is the national lead for farm animal care in Canada. With 29 partner organizations, NFACC addresses animal welfare issues related to farm animals, with a focus on animals raised for the production of food for humans. The organization develops Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals; is creating a process for the development of animal care assessment programs and provides a forum for open dialogue on farm animal welfare amongst diverse groups.
NFACC would like to thank the event organizers and Dr. Temple Grandin for supporting a positive conversation about the importance of farm animal welfare. More information on NFACC is available at www.nfacc.ca.
